Wetsuits – what are they, and which one suits your needs?
At One Open Sky, you’ll find a broad selection of women’s wetsuits for year-round use. We offer wetsuits from leading brands in the industry, including Neilpryde and O’Neill. These brands specialize in creating wetsuits for various watersports activities such as windsurfing, kitesurfing, SUP, and surfing. If you’re unsure about the activity options for a wetsuit, feel free to call us at +45 97 12 29 65 – we’re ready to help.
We’ve divided our women’s wetsuits into three categories: summer wetsuits, winter wetsuits, and all-round wetsuits. This allows you to find exactly the wetsuit that matches your needs and the temperature you require. We have wetsuits in all three categories, each tailored to different activities, and we ensure they all have a perfect fit.
We recommend all-round wetsuits if you want to be active in the spring and into autumn. Our summer wetsuits are ideal for the warm summer months, while our winter wetsuits are designed for use in cold conditions. Wetsuit thickness can vary greatly between seasons, so we recommend reading the product description for more details on which temperatures each wetsuit is suitable for.
Choosing wetsuit thickness and use
When choosing the right women’s wetsuit, it’s important to understand how the thickness affects insulation and use. Wetsuits come in different thicknesses, typically measured in millimeters, and your choice depends on where and when you’ll use the suit.
A wetsuit with a thickness of 1–3 mm is suitable for the summer months and warmer water temperatures, where you need freedom of movement and only light protection from the cold. For slightly cooler water, such as in spring or early autumn, a 3–5 mm wetsuit may be more appropriate. This thickness provides extra insulation, so you can stay warm longer without significantly compromising mobility.
For winter use or very cold conditions, a wetsuit of 5–6 mm is recommended. This type offers maximum insulation and effective protection against the cold but may feel a bit stiffer and heavier than thinner models. It’s important to balance your need for warmth with your desire for flexibility when choosing wetsuit thickness.
In summary, the thicker the wetsuit, the better the insulation, but the less flexible it becomes. Therefore, you should choose thickness based on both water temperature and activity level to ensure the best experience and comfort on the water.
Temperature and thickness – general guidelines
To make it easier to choose the right wetsuit, you can follow these general guidelines:
- Summer wetsuits: Recommended for water temperatures above 15°C. Thickness is typically between 1 and 3 mm. These suits are light and flexible, making them ideal for hot summer days when you want maximum freedom of movement.
- All-round wetsuits: Suitable for water temperatures between 10 and 20°C. Thickness is between 3 and 5 mm. These suits offer a good balance between warmth and flexibility and can be used in both spring and autumn.
- Winter wetsuits: Recommended for water temperatures down to 12°C. Thickness is typically 5–6 mm. These suits are designed to keep you warm even in the coldest conditions but may be less flexible than thinner models.
Our range of wetsuits from different brands and their technologies
The various brands offer a range of women’s wetsuit designs to keep you warm. You’ll find everything from short-sleeved and long-sleeved wetsuits to suits with short or long legs. The same applies to the different closure systems available: Back Zip, Front Zip, and Chest Zip at One Open Sky. You can easily filter by closure type using our filter.
For the more hardcore watersports enthusiasts who do windsurfing or kitesurfing, we primarily recommend Neilpryde wetsuits. Neilpryde is a long-established brand that has grown into one of the giants in watersports and is known for its performance wetsuits. They produce some of the world’s best windsurfing gear, as evidenced by their status as suppliers to the Olympics in 2008. Over the years, they’ve also produced neoprene accessories, from gloves to boots and their well-known wetsuits. You can check out Denmark’s largest selection of Neilpryde wetsuits right here on our website.
Neilpryde produces some of the market’s best neoprene suits, gloves, and boots, thanks to their innovative approach to neoprene manufacturing. Their perfectionist approach is evident even in the seams between neoprene panels, where they’ve developed various stitching methods for optimal performance on the water. The same applies to the many technologies used in their neoprene, with carefully studied membrane structures. You can read more about this in the individual product descriptions.
Neilpryde has always focused on producing wetsuits for hardcore watersports enthusiasts. Their wetsuits feature special technologies that reduce lactic acid build-up in the body, allowing you to stay active on the water for longer. If you want to find the Neilpryde suit that fits your specific needs, including the right fit, you can read more in their product descriptions.
O’Neill is the oldest brand in the wetsuit industry and has grown into a giant in watersports apparel. Since 1952, they have led the way in neoprene development. From O’Neill, you can get everything from neoprene boots to world-class wetsuits for both women and juniors. They also produce a range of excellent women’s wetsuits, specially developed for SUP and surf, but also suitable for wind- and kitesurfing.
It’s no coincidence that O’Neill produces some of the market’s best wetsuits. This is evident in their latest neoprene, Technobutter 3, which is among the most exclusive on the market. The pre-stretched neoprene provides world-class freedom of movement, flexibility, warmth, and comfort. This is due to the unique cell structure they’ve developed, giving the neoprene its special functionality. This type is here to stay in O’Neill’s range and will not disappoint you in the water. The self-regulating temperature element of Technobutter 3 is mainly found in O’Neill’s Psycho and Hyperfreak suits.
Have you found the right size? If not, read on!
To get the most out of your suit, it’s important to find a fit and size that is snug without being uncomfortable. The back is often the best place to check fit, as well as over the shoulders and at the lower back, while freedom of movement is also crucial. The suit should fit closely, with minimal air between the suit and your body.
If you want more information about size and warm comfort, we recommend checking our size guides, which are specific to each product. If you’re still unsure, we’re always ready to help you by phone or email.

Additional considerations when choosing a wetsuit
When choosing a wetsuit, you should also consider which activities you’ll primarily use it for. For surfing and SUP, extra flexibility around the shoulders and arms is often important, while windsurfing and kitesurfing may require more insulation and durability. Consider whether you need extra features such as reinforced knees, built-in hoods, or sealed seams to prevent water entry.
It can also be an advantage to choose a wetsuit with a zipper placement that suits your preferences. Back Zip is easy to get on and off, while Chest Zip often provides better waterproofing and flexibility. Some suits also have zippers at the ankles and wrists for easier entry and exit.
Care and durability
To get the most out of your wetsuit, it’s important to maintain it properly. Always rinse your suit in fresh water after use, especially after being in saltwater. Hang it to dry in the shade and avoid direct sunlight, as UV rays can break down the neoprene over time. Store the wetsuit flat or hanging on a wide hanger to avoid creases and damage.
With proper care, a quality wetsuit can last for many seasons and provide you with countless great experiences on the water.
Environment and sustainability
More and more manufacturers are working to make wetsuit production more environmentally friendly. This can include using recycled materials, water-based adhesives, or more sustainable production processes. If you want to consider the environment, look for brands that focus on sustainability and choose a wetsuit that aligns with your values.
Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced watersports enthusiast, you’ll find a wide selection of women’s wetsuits at One Open Sky to match your needs. We’re ready to advise you so you get the optimal experience on the water - all year round.
