The Oakley Backwoods Balaclava in Blackout covers face and neck under the helmet and works on its own as well. It is built from a soft blend of polyamide, polyester and elastane with plenty of stretch.
The material is a soft blend of 53 percent polyamide, 30 percent polyester and 17 percent elastane. The polyamide brings the durability, so the fabric handles helmet edges and goggle straps day after day. The polyester keeps water pickup low, so the layer does not turn heavy and cold when you breathe through it for hours. The elastane is the part that matters most: 17 percent is enough for the balaclava to stretch around head and jaw and sit flat against the skin without squeezing. That close contact is what closes off the draught at the neck. Oakley describes it as a strong under-helmet liner, and because the fabric is thin and smooth it adds no bulk under the shell. It also works as a standalone cold weather cover. The neck section runs long enough that you can push the face panel down and use it as a plain neck gaiter once the sun comes out.
