Midlayer guide

How do you choose the right midlayer and what materials are actually suitable for the midlayer? Find the answer here in the midlayer guide blog. We've selected the most commonly used textile materials and give our take on today's quality midlayers.

The midlayer is the middle layer, as we also call it in Danish. A midlayer is essential when you're heading out into nature but still want to stay warm all day. Some would argue that the midlayer is an overlooked part of the ski kit that many people haven't managed to pack in their suitcase when heading to this year's destination. The midlayer just opens up for a lot of comfort when you're talking about activity over a longer period of time, which is why we see the midlayer as an important part of the ski touring kit. With the right choice of midlayers, you can always make sure you stay warm. On very warm days, you can choose the thinner midlayer as a midlayer, while on colder days you can have a thick down layer and midlayer.

Materials in the midlayer

The materials in a midlayer are designed to enhance your performance in an active environment without getting wet, cold or too warm. Synthetic or wool are the most commonly used, and for good reason. Cotton is a 'no go' as it holds the moisture and humidity that the body creates. This means that it doesn't get the chance to breathe and you don't get to feel what real comfort could be. Below are the most common materials found in a midlayer and what makes them extra comfortable on the slopes.

Fleece and microfleece

Fleece and microfleece are well-known materials that are now particularly suitable for skiing. The weave that characterizes fleece, where the fibers stand in contrast to traditional weaving, provides the transport of moisture so that it quickly leaves the clothing, and thus the body. Fleece and microfleece are available in many different thicknesses and insulation properties, making it an incredibly versatile material to look for when choosing a midlayer.

WOOL

Wool and merino wool - Wool is nature's most effective and indeed advanced insulation layer, which is why it is so popular with many sports enthusiasts. Wool in a midlayer provides the ability for sweat and condensation to be wicked away from the body in a natural way. Wool can feel like a really warm material, and it is, but once the temperature regulating and breathable effect of wool kicks in, you really see the significant benefit that wool can offer. Another benefit of using wool in a midlayer is that it lasts longer without starting to smell, hang it outside to dry and it magically cleans itself, so you can skip a few washes. .

Down

Down is a really versatile and lightweight yet incredibly warm material. Down provides a compact warmth, over the past years it has found its basis in versatile midlayers. Down midlayers have found their inspiration in jackets, and like wool, down provides a very effective thermal layer. A thermal layer that provides warmth when needed and keeps the body cool as activity levels rise.

Primaloft

A synthetic material designed to reflect the body's heat. If you take a piece of Primaloft and place it on your skin, you will soon feel its reflective effect. Primaloft also has breathable properties! A product that started its development in 1980 and is still seeing global development today.

Layering and breathability

Midlayers are an essential part of your ski outfit that you can't afford to compromise on. Most modern midlayers are designed to keep you warm with their breathable features and dense design. Not all midlayers are equally snug, and it also depends 100% on what you're into. We've given you an idea of what you can never go wrong with, and there are many of these examples, just take a look at the midlayer page. The layer-on-layer principle is a key element when shopping for a midlayer today. Many ski jackets are getting thinner and thinner as breathability and water column pressure are in focus.
