THE WORLDS FINEST SPORTSWEAR - THE STORY BEHIND
Since 2000, Kjus has been making skiwear for the ultimate skier. Not necessarily ultimate in their challenge of the mountain, but ultimate in their demands for quality on and off the slopes. 'The Freedom of Movement' is a slogan that has followed Kjus since 2005, supplemented with 'Follow your passion'. That's what skiing is all about - freedom of movement and living your enthusiasm - whether it's on blue, red or black slopes, off-piste or in the park.

Since its inception in 2000, Kjus has set new standards in skiwear time and time again. The original idea was to create skiwear that is not too warm, not too cold and made from materials that meet the needs of the individual skier. The materials had to be a combination of light, soft and stretchy.
By 2005, Kjus was present in 13 different countries, and in 2005 the brand crossed the pond to the USA. When Lasse Kjus retired in March 2006, he set about building a corps of brand ambassadors led by ski stars Bode Miller and Didier Cuche. Today, Kjus is sold worldwide and has won numerous awards at sports trade fairs (Ispo Awards) and most recently the coveted Red Dot Design Award.
Over the years, Kjus has maintained and further developed the simple design, perfect details and stretchable materials of the highest quality. The collection consists of all-weather skiwear, a stylish lifestyle collection with lightweight down jackets, leisure pants, sweaters, polos and shirts, and a broad golf collection.
THE DNA BEHIND KJUS
Fit, lightweight, stretch, no sound, best technologies, material and detail oriented. It takes time to build the world's best ski jackets. A normal jacket takes about 2 hours to make, a Kjus jacket takes more than 14 hours. Between 250 and 500 parts are used, a more traditional jacket uses 100 - 150 parts. Fit is important and remember Kjus has many sizes, each size jumps by 2 cm in length and girth. Men's sizes are 46 - 58 (60), that's 7 to 8 sizes to choose from. Unlike others who use sizes. XS - XXL, here sizes often jump by 5 cm and there are 5 to 6 sizes to choose from.
The basics
Explaining the construction of a ski jacket is almost like building a house.
Starting on the roof, the outer material of the jacket, we want water and dirt to run off the fabric as quickly and easily as possible. This is done using a coating that is sprayed on the outside. This spray creates a tension in the surface so that water and dirt run off. The surface should be stretchable so we can move freely in the jacket. Several manufacturers only use a coating and do not use a membrane. The jacket is then water-repellent with the help of this coating, but a coating can be worn and washed off, which is something to be aware of.
Behind the roof there should be a membrane (under the roof) that ensures 100% waterproofness and at the same time ensures that steam from the inside can escape, this provides the optimal indoor climate. In a ski jacket, we are talking about a rubber membrane that acts like human skin, stretchable and durable. This means that large droplets from the outside cannot penetrate, but small vapor droplets can penetrate from the inside out. Kjus jackets also have a higher breathability (vapor can escape) due to extra ventilation on the shoulders, heat will typically move upwards.
Waterproofness and breathability are measured in mm per m2 of fabric and grams per m2 over 24 hours, respectively. This means that a jacket with a 20000mm/20000g/m2/24h membrane can keep out a 20 meter water column before it collapses, but can also transport 20 liters of water in the form of steam out of the jacket in 24 hours. The membrane and surface fabric are taped so that it is 100% waterproof.
In order to keep warm, insulation is needed. On a house, this is typically glass wool insulation. In a ski jacket, we want a highly breathable insulation (so the vapor can move on) and preferably a very stretchy insulation for the best mobility and comfort. Typically, you want to work with fiber insulation that is not too heavy and dries quickly when washed. Down or a combination of down and fiber is also an option. Kjus jackets make use of a handful of different insulations. Price and insulation quality go hand in hand, and on the jackets with the finest insulation you will find down insulation from geese.
The layer closest to the body should be a durable waistband that is also able to wick moisture and warmth and withstand everyday use. The same goes for ski pants.
Should you choose a shell jacket or a lined jacket? It's definitely up to you, but the following may help you decide.
When we ski all day up and down the slopes we are exposed to heat and cold, maybe even snow... On the way down the slopes we might start sweating as our body is in motion. When we're on the lift and the cold and wind hit our body, we might start to freeze. With a lined ski jacket, you don't have to worry about getting dressed and undressed. The jacket will keep you warm and in the right climate if the membrane and insulation are right. On the other hand, if you're extremely active and climbing up the mountain to freeride down, a shell jacket with a membrane and a light insulating jacket underneath might be a good solution. During the climb, you can keep the shell jacket in your backpack and put it on for the descent. Another great advantage of a shell jacket is the ability to choose your own body heat, meaning you can layer up to get warmer or layer down to get cooler. Shell jackets also often have different ventilation options than a lined jacket, with the ability to open up the jacket 100% in several places.
Kjus Ski Jackets
For a membrane to work optimally, it's important that what's underneath (ski underwear and midlayer) is also sweat-wicking. It's not smart to wear a cotton sweater that absorbs all the moisture, as you'll get too cold on your body.
