Sustainability has become part of Burton's DNA

For better or worse, culture is the backbone of any organization. Burton sets high standards for international rights, their factory workers, the culture above, but even to any person who might want to wear their clothing - they strive to have the most positive impact on every person around them. Sustainability, flexibility and safety have been part of the Burton organization since day 1, and now they are needed more than ever.

Burton's playground is changing

Climate change is becoming more and more apparent around the world, and when you're a snowboarder or skier, there's no doubt that these changes are even more apparent to you. Burton realizes that their big playground on the mountain is changing forever, which is why they are working hard to reduce the carbon footprint of their production. Burton knows that their own sustainability efforts won't do it alone, which is why they have joined forces with 'Protect Our Winters' and 'BICEP' to support and promote positive climate change. Burton can also be considered an advocacy organization in this context, as they aim to achieve a 20% reduction in carbon emissions and further divert 75% of waste from landfill by 2020. Burton's collaboration with the BICEP network and Protect Our Winters (POW) has a mission to influence the many systemic solutions to climate change. POW is an association of passionate athletes, sport pioneers and forward-thinking business leaders who are continually working to turn outdoorsmen into effective climate advocates for snow sports. A project that, over time, will change our attitude towards the environment in the name of protecting what Burton loves most, snowsports.

Burton US Open Snowboarding Championships

The Burton US Open snowboarding championship is one of the world's largest snowboarding events with prize money to match. Since 2017, the US Open has been carbon neutral. Together with Vail Resorts, all electricity, fuel and waste is generated sustainably to run the event. Burton commits to producing 0 percent Co2 waste in US OPEN 2020.

Sustainability and safety in everything Burton

Burton is committed to sustainability in everything they do, and when it comes to their own products, you can be sure it's top of mind. Using the right chemicals and materials is crucial for Burton products to meet the environmental restrictions of the Bluesign® label. It's one thing to produce products under the right conditions, but it's another thing to produce products that last a really long time, and if something goes wrong, it's repaired instead of having to be produced again. This is exactly why all Burton Softgoods are registered with a lifetime warranty. This gives Burton customers the option of always being able to return products for a free refund if there is a fault with the product. A commitment on Burton's part, but also an assurance that Burton customers can get back on the mountain as quickly as possible. In conjunction with this guarantee, Burton has also set a goal for all packaging to be 100% reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2020.

Burton has always focused on sustainable practices and ways to optimize their internal processes for many years. Sustainability is a major focus area for many textile companies, and certainly for companies like Burton. Burton started working with Bluesign® back in 2011, and it has since made a big mark on the development of the company's sustainable direction. Purchasing the right materials and developing in a sensible environment where processes and energy efficiency are important parameters. For winter 2019, 81% of the Burton Outerwear collection was bluesign® approved (Burton ski jackets, Burton ski pants, Burton midlayers, etc.). In 2020, the number will rise to 91%, because the course is set for the maximum. All outerwear and softgoods must be developed in a 100% sustainable environment, where all processes are bluesign® approved and inspected.

What is Bluesign®?

Some sustainability certifications focus on what the finished product looks like, but not actually what upstream processes create the finished textile product. That's what Bluesign® does. Bluesign® goes to the core of the product by analyzing each process, material and chemical to ensure a sustainable product and not least a sustainable supply chain.

When you buy Bluesign® certified products, you can rest assured that they are designed and manufactured according to the 3 key principles below:

  1. Resource productivity: Bluesign® has a specific focus on ensuring that the energy source is utilized in the most optimal and sustainable way. Resource productivity is a requirement that ensures that the internal processes around production are carefully selected for a high resource efficiency that does not compromise on waste material or unnecessary polluting energy sources.
  2. Human safety: Bluesign® products are developed from selected and approved materials that meet strict global standards for chemical and human safety. Chemical and human safety standards. This ensures that Burton's employees and customers can feel safe in approved materials produced under safe conditions that do not contribute to any kind of chemical exposure.
  3. Clean Air and Water Emissions: Bluesign® focuses on constantly improving the climate around production so that no large and dangerous amounts of harmful substances are released into the air and our water.

The Bluesign® system places its demands on Burton and their entire chain of processes and suppliers. By achieving 100% wearability of outerwear and softgoods, Burton maximizes their impact on the environment and the people around their products. They deliver products according to high environmental standards and sustainable responsibility. Bluesign® is a trademark that ensures that your Burton product is developed under the best conditions with a strong focus on transparency in production, a minimum impact on the climate and the right human conditions. Burton's biggest opportunities to work towards something more sustainable lie in their products. Burton is reducing their resource consumption, improving emissions from the manufacturing of softgoods by using organic cotton, recyclable polyester and last but not least Bluesign® approved materials. All snowboards contain wood cores extracted from responsibly managed forests and are constructed using a plant-based epoxy, Super Sap.

The future of Burton products

Burton's goals are among the highest in the snowsports industry. By design year 2020 (2022 winter season), the goal is for all Burton skiwear and softgoods to be constructed according to Bluesign® restrictions. An additional goal is for Burton to reduce the environmental impact of their snowboards, snowboard boots and remaining hardgoods products by 20% before winter.
