How do I choose the right ski pants?
Ski pants are just as important as a ski jacket when you’re heading on a ski holiday, where breathability plays a major role. Both ski pants and a ski jacket are part of your outer layer, so it’s crucial to have ski pants that are durable, windproof, and water-repellent, as this layer protects your body against the elements like wind, snow, and rain. One Open Sky offers a wide range of ski pants, and you can mix and match jackets and pants exactly as you like.
What should you consider when buying ski pants?
When it comes to finding the right pair of ski pants, there are several factors to consider. What kind of fit do you prefer, what features and functionality do you need, do you like insulated pants, do you want bib pants, ski pants with suspenders, or a classic style?
Fit
Fit varies greatly from brand to brand, so it’s important to consider whether you prefer shell pants or other types of ski pants. At One Open Sky, our ski pants are divided into three different fits: Slim fit, Regular, and Relaxed fit. Under Slim fit, you’ll find many ski pants from the renowned brand Kjus, which focuses on mobility and comfort. Despite the close fit, Kjus offers some of the most flexible and stretchable ski pants on the market. Regular fit includes classic ski brands like Helly Hansen, Oakley, and Scott—brands that value mobility, though they may not use the same exclusive materials as Kjus, but still produce some of the world’s best ski pants with outstanding fit. Relaxed fit covers many classic snowboard brands like Burton and Volcom, where design and a baggy look are easy to find.
The big question is often, how should my ski pants fit? They should fit exactly how you like them—whether you’re normally a size M but prefer a 3XL, it’s up to you. The most important thing is that your ski pants aren’t too short or impossible to adjust at the waist, even with a belt or suspenders.
Regular, Suspenders, or Bib Pants?
There are typically three main types of ski pants: with suspenders, without suspenders, and bib pants. No type is better than the others—it’s a matter of personal preference. Many people choose ski pants with suspenders because they feel the pants stay up better and fit more securely around the waist, especially if you fall on the mountain.
We offer a wide selection of great insulated ski pants, whether you prefer suspenders or not. We recommend always choosing ski pants that fit snugly around the waist, ideally with the option to tighten or loosen as needed. We also suggest a higher waist, such as bib pants, as these combined with high breathability and waterproofing provide extra coverage around the waist if you’re in deep snow, especially if you use a snow skirt for added protection.
Insulated or Shell Ski Pants?
Just like with jackets, there are countless options for insulation levels and functionality in ski pants. From extremely versatile shell ski pants without insulation to heavily insulated pants. But which is best for you?
Shell pants come without insulation, so you need to regulate warmth yourself using the layering principle—simply add the necessary layers for the day. Shell pants often have higher breathability, as moisture has fewer layers to pass through.
Insulated ski pants are a classic and almost always a safe choice. You know what you’re getting and can choose how warm your ski pants are by looking for stronger insulation types. Insulation can be natural or synthetic fibers, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. Feel free to contact us if you have questions about the different fibers—we’re here to help.
Membranes
Membranes are often unnecessary for the average Dane, but they’re still an essential topic when discussing ski pants among colleagues. A membrane is a thin layer of synthetic rubber that ensures the ski pants are waterproof and breathable. The membrane is the main difference between ski pants and rain pants—both are waterproof, but only ski pants are breathable. The membrane has tiny holes: on the outside, the holes are small enough to keep water out, while on the inside, they’re larger to let sweat, vapor, and moisture escape.
Membranes come in various types, qualities, and functionalities, with the most recognized also offering secondary benefits. Two of the most well-known membranes we offer are the durable Gore-Tex and the Dermizax membrane, which focuses on mobility. Many of our ski pants feature membranes developed by the brands themselves, but these are still high-quality membranes.
Ventilation Options
Many ski pants, including shell pants, now come with extra ventilation options. Whether it’s a small zipper on the thigh to release excess heat or pants that can be zipped open halfway, these features are usually found in shell pants, not insulated ones. Of course, there are still classic ski pants without these options.
