The optimal length for your ski depends on your height, weight, skiing style and ability. There is no exact formula for the right ski length, but a good rule of thumb is that a ski should reach between your chin and the top of your head.
Below is a simple guide to choosing the length of your next ski based on your height. Note that an all-mountain or freeride ski should often be longer than a piste ski. This is due to the wider skis' construction, where their front tip lifts off the snow earlier (rocker) compared to a piste ski to ensure better flotation in deep snow. The increased amount of rocker also reduces the ski's contact with the ground and it is therefore beneficial to choose a ski with more length to ensure edge grip in turns.

As mentioned earlier, there are a number of different parameters to consider when choosing the length of your next ski. Here's a quick overview of reasons to choose a shorter or longer ski.

A shorter ski will be the bottom of the range as seen in the chart above. For example, a beginner with a height of 175cm will need a piste ski of about 160cm.
