A pair of goggles consists of three main components: the frame, the lens and the strap. The lens is what protects your eyes and face from the weather. The frame is what holds the lens in place and provides ventilation to prevent the lens from fogging up. It should sit comfortably on your face without pressure points and rest snugly against your helmet to keep the weather out. The strap is what holds the frame to your head.

Anon lenses are divided into 2 categories

Cylindrical (Flat) Lens Goggles

The surface of Cylindrical lenses is curved only on the horizontal axis, wrapping securely around the face while remaining flat vertically.

Factors to consider:

  • Cylindrical lenses can sit slightly closer to the face, allowing them to provide a large field of view with a smaller overall eyewear profile.
  • A cylindrical lens allows for more venting volume in a pair of glasses.
  • Cylindrical is available in a wide range of fits and sizes that are compatible with most helmets and face sizes.
  • Cheaper cylindrical lenses can cause distortion and increase eye fatigue (note that Anon Cylindrical lenses have tapered edges that help eliminate distortion and reduce eye fatigue).

Toric Lens Goggles

Toric is a combination of the best qualities of Cylindrical and the former Spherical. Toric lenses curve horizontally and vertically, while the vertical curve is smaller compared to the previous Spherical goggles to improve venting volume potential.

Factors to consider:

  • Toric lenses provide ample space between the face and lens, allowing for increased ventilation and reducing the risk of fogging while maximizing field of view.

Anon Lens Guide

There are literally hundreds of different colors and shades when it comes to all the lens options on the market. So to simplify this process, the industry has adopted a standardized measurement called Visual Light Transmission or VLT.

  • Color: Visible Light Transmission (VLT)
The amount of light that a specific lens allows to pass through it is measured by a number called Visible Light Transmission or VLT. High quality lenses on the market have a VLT rating between 1 and 100, usually expressed as a percentage. The VLT rating determines what percentage of light you will be able to see. For example, Anon's Sonny Onyx has a VLT rating of 6%, which means you can see 6% of the light through your glasses.

  • Lens color selection based on light conditions
Choose a low VLT rating for bright sunny days. For example, the Sunny Onyx lens has a VLT rating of 6%, which means that only 6% of light passes through the lens. In contrast, on cloudy days you should look for a higher VLT level.

Below you can see the different VLT levels and which lens is suitable for the specific weather.

Anon perceive

Anon's goggle lens technology is called PERCEIVE. PERCEIVE goggle lenses improve contrast and clarity across every hue level, so skiers and snowboarders can get the absolute best vision and the most accurate perception of the surrounding environment, regardless of light and weather conditions.

Anon PERCEIVE lenses are available in several different tints, each one purpose-built for a different VLT mode.

Colors and Mirror finish

The color of a lens is often related to its tint, with lower VLT lenses usually having a darker color. Lenses intended for use in bright light may also include a mirror finish to reflect light, reduce glare and decrease eye fatigue in sunny conditions.

Anon Lens Guide: Technology and Features

Aside from the shape, tint and color, there are a few other factors to consider when choosing goggles. Most importantly, skiers and snowboarders should review the lens construction, ventilation, durability and interchangeability.

Goggle Lens Construction

There are two types of lens construction: stamped and injected. Stamped lenses are made with the same thickness across the entire lens, which can cause distortion because you will be looking through thicker glass at the edges of the field of view. Because of this, stamped lenses can be cheaper. Alternatively, injected lenses are made with varying thickness and are usually thinner at the edges to prevent this distortion. Because of this, injected lenses provide more accurate visual perception of the environment, but can cost more. All PERCEIVE lenses from Anon are built with an injected construction.

Goggle Lens Durability and Weather Resistance

Goggles can take a beating during a day on the mountain, and durability should be a primary factor when considering new lenses. Leading manufacturers (like Anon) apply special coatings to the lens surfaces to improve performance.

  • Hydrophobic coating: A hydrophobic coating helps repel water and snow that gets on the lens, forcing it to roll off instead of sticking and freezing.
  • Oleophobic coating: An oleophobic coating provides extra resistance to finger smudges and makes cleaning easier.
  • Anti-fog treatment: Applied to the inner lens, an anti-fog treatment prevents moisture build-up and reduces fogging.

Note: PERCEIVE lenses from Anon have both a hydrophobic coating and an oleophobic coating. And the lenses do not fog.

Lens replacement options

No matter how great your lens is, sometimes Mother Nature takes a U-turn and conditions go from bright and sunny to cloudy. When this happens, it's useful to have the option to replace the glass in your goggles. To simplify this process, many glasses now have integrated lens exchange features.

Common types of Anon lens exchange systems include MAGNA-TECH®, M-Fusion and Standard.

  • MAGNA-TECH®: Anon's MAGNA-TECH quick change lens system uses magnets with up to nine connection points (depending on eyewear model) to secure the lens in place in the frame, sealing out the weather and providing clear vision. When you need to replace the lens, simply slide out the current lens and snap the replacement lens into place. The whole process takes just a few seconds and the self-adjusting magnets allow you to perform at your best every time, even while wearing gloves or mittens.
  • M-Fusion: Anon's M-Fusion Latch Lens Change Technology combines the simplicity of quick lens adjustment with a magnetic locking system.
  • Standard: Standard swap lenses have small notches that snap into the frame. Simply push the lens out and insert a new lens, connect the lens to the points on the frame and gently squeeze to secure it in place.
  • Pro tip: Keep a spare goggle lens in your jacket pocket and be prepared for changing weather conditions.

Which goggle is right for me?

In recent years, advances in optics have allowed brands to further refine their technology and increase the contrast and definition visible through their lenses. So because of this, there are more options than ever before. But remember, choosing goggles is all about fit, and you should choose the frame + lens that best suits your face. To get the right goggle and lens, we recommend a two-step approach.

Go through this guide thoroughly to understand exactly what you should be looking for.
